Innovation in Metacity

This morning I came across a tweet from my friend Dylan McCall.

Made a patch for #Metacity to do nice positional sounds ☺

Basically, Dylan has made a patch that utilizes libcanberra’s advanced functionality (read: the thing GNOME uses to make sound effects) and makes metacity give some information about where the window is, so that the sound effects can be positioned.

This would mean, for example, that if you clicked a button on the right hand side of your screen, your right-hand side speaker would make a ‘pop’ sound.

This is a great idea that I believe (read: wild claim without any evidence here) would increase usability for these events. I congratulate Dylan on not only thinking about/of it, but making a patch as well.

By the way, if anyone is involved in committing patches in metacity, ‘nudge ‘nudge, wink wink 🙂
